i know that while being a witness, we were not really allowed to watch horror movies, or anything that smacked of demonism.
anything supernatural.
my question is, what movie or movies, since leaving the society, has really scared or upset you?
I have to say I don't get the idea of "Event Horizon" as a scary movie... I just thought it was an unbelievably bad movie.
Circe and I were talking about this while she was posting and I threw out Alien and Amityville as movies that I found scary at the time I first watched them. Alien was the first rated R movie I think I ever went to. My dad took my brothers and I.
When Circe and I watched Amityville again not so long ago I found it fun to watch but not all that frightening. What gives me the shivers is that it is supposedly based off of a true story and if I let my mind go and accept that as true then BRRRRRRRR...
Circe had one other movie that she found scary and that was "American History X" staring Edward Norton. Incredible film and what makes it so frightening in its own right is the subject matter, that this kind of unreasoning bigotry and hatred shown in this movie actually exists in the world that we live in is truly frightening.

following the link given by kent,.
i have several observation to make:.
(from the link : http://www.un.org/moreinfo/ngolink/brochure.htm).
Zev,
Just now reading this thread and had one thought pop-up in my mind regarding the letter you sent to the UN. This thought is in regard to your use of references to various pieces of WT literature and where those quotes might be found. How is the reader of your letter to know what journals or books are being quoted? You've used the abreviations that we as Witnesses or x-Witnesses would readily recognize, but would a member of the UN who has no or limited exposure to the Witnesses recognize the abbreviations. I know they may not recognize the names of the books or journals either, however I think having the full name would definitely aid them in verifying the veracity of the quotes.
So I might suggest that any posters who are looking to write this organization make use of the full name of the books or magazines and not the internal abrevaitions used by the WT CD or bound volumes.
Just a thought,
David P (felix a)
My thanks to all who are contributing here I am really enjoying this thread and the info being shared right now.
The answer is yes. The only real worry he'll have is passing the test.

organization.
following the model of first-century christianity, jehovah's witnesses have no clergy-laity division.
all baptized members are ordained ministers and share in the preaching and teaching work.
JT,
So they are back to publishing that, "All baptized members are ordained ministers". I seem to recall that this has fluctuated a few times over the years.
But give me a break on this one, "Jehovah's Witnesses have no clergy-laity division" the rest of their paragraph shows that there is a formal division that exists. They can call it an organizational structure but it is formalized and it does create a division and a well defined hierarchy of status and responsibility.
If you were a baptized Witness male God forbid that you started acting and dealing with matters in the congregation as if you were one of the appointed elders when you weren't. Can you just imagine approaching a couple of other brothers and telling them that a matter has come to your attention that neds to be dealt with and that you'd like them to serve with you to hear out the matter and make a decision. Yeah right! They'd laugh you right right out of there...
No clergy-laity division my ass... Give me a break.
Thanks for the morning laugh JT. Tell the wife hello.

ok.......this year marks the 10th annniversary when the wts unleashed the "pay attention to the flock" book a.k.a the top secret elder manual.
in honor of that milestone i'll post some memorable gems from what is now the modern-day holy grail.....(parenthetical comments are mine)........ sexual misconduct, including; adultery, fornication, and other forms of "por.ne'a..": .
uncleanness includes an intentional momentary touching of sexual parts or caressing of breasts.
U,
My wife and I are packing up to move in about two weeks... If you can hold out for a while and remind me I'll go through my files to see if they are still around. If so I'll scan them and get them out to you. But right now they're buried, if I even still have them.

just jump up on stage, rip off your suit to reveal a punk rocker out fit.
pull out yer guitar... and play stairway to heaven?
durring the middle of an assembly, jump out of your seat, fly around the auditorium screaming , "satan is my king!
Imagine if you will, the London Philharmonic playing as you walked in the door for bookstudy. Seems pretty safe, an orchestra playing something classical. As you listen for a few minutes you notice that you are hearing something vaguely familiar, only you can't quiet place it. You feel like you should know whats playing. Maybe there should even be words to it. Yes, you can almost hear the words that should go with the music.
In your mind you begin to hear the following;
Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faithAnd I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
....
....
....
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
The only thing is the lyrics are never sung, the orchestra plays on and no one ever notices.
Yes I love Zepplin, however at heart I'm a Stones fan.
Can you guess where I might be going with this???
You see for several years I had the bookstudy in my apartment in Brooklyn. How about now? Are you beginning to form a picture of what the brothers & sisters might have been listening to as they came to the meeting for spiritual refreshment in my home??? Hmmmm..
You see sometimes I really would play something to see if anyone would even catch what was being played. Sadly, they never did...
Also heard during these musical preludes were symphonic versions of Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull. Or songs like "Do You Think I'm Sexy" or " Smells Like Teen Spirit" performed as Gregorian Chants.

AF,
Now that you mention it I do seem to remember that the one I copied in the library 16 years ago was a beige/yellow and soft covered.
It was probably the Branch Book that was hard bound. I just remembered that I had a copy since my days at Bethel. Thanks...

JT,
I think you spent your time well if you, "spent 45 min discussing the finer points of touching a sisters breast and fondling them-" I believe that there are many fine points to touching a breast, granted I would rather touch them than discuss them... But hey, whatever floats your boat. Right? I'm mean you older men had to be able to educate the young brothers and sistes about those fine points, so I think they did a good thing in discussing them for so long.
Now if they would had only followed the example set by the John Cleese in the movie "The Meaning of Life" the class would have been absolutely riveted.

BlackMan,
What do you mean "Elder Manual 10th Anniversary"? I know I made copies of the damn thing back in 1983 or 84 while I was at Bethel. Then again I had also made copies of the Branch Book and kept copies of study questions used in Gilead too. So again I ask what do you mean by Elder Manual - 10th Anniversary???
Curiously yours

PS
I did enjoy the highlights you've brought out.
